What type of massage is best for relaxation?

We use a wide variety of approaches, based on which therapist you book, but many of our clients find best results with the following options:

  • Myofascial- slow, methodical strokes to address tight muscles, retrain the brain to loosen it’s grip on the connective tissue, and let your nervous system slow down and unwind
  • Thai massage- a combination of slow compression, stretching, and traditional Thai tools to address tension and let the body release naturally, so your reset sticks with you long after you leave
  • Lomi Lomi- a traditional Hawaiian approach to massage; deeply relaxing and focused on reconnecting the body to the core and reconnecting halves of the body so you move with ease
  • Heated tools- hot stones are always included at no extra cost, but we also have heated cupping tools, hot towels, and heated bamboo tools, which allow your therapist to address your pain with less intensity and more relaxation

As always, we’ll discuss your needs and preferences with you to be sure your nervous system and body can fully relax and reset.

What type of massage is best for pain relief?

Every client is unique, so we collaborate and integrate as a team based on your needs. Most of our clients who are looking for pain relief find a combo of approaches works best. Common treatments for pain relief include:

  • Active Release Techniques- addresses movement patterns, nerve entrapment, and painful, tight muscles

  • Trigger point therapy- addresses referred pain causing nerve sensation, restricted movement, and headaches

  • Myofascial release- typically moderate pressure, slow, and works to release restricted connective tissue surrounding muscles and nerves

  • Neuromuscular therapy- systematic techniques to address chronically overworked muscle fibers

  • Sports massage- stretching, active techniques, and retraining the brain to connect with and engage the muscle correctly

How often should I get treatment?

It depends on your condition. Some clients come weekly to address severe pain or swelling issues, while others schedule monthly maintenance sessions. We are always willing to chat on the phone about your unique needs and help you get paired with the right therapist and the right frequency of sessions to match your goals. OUR goal is to have you out of pain quickly and back to a routine that feels comfortable to you. Most of our clients schedule 1-2 times per month after they address their initial pain.

Do you offer pre-surgical and post-surgical massage?

Yes. Pre-surgical lymphatic drainage is focused on preparing your body for surgery so it can handle the load being placed on it by medications and the surgical work. Post-surgical lymphatic drainage and scar tissue treatments help reduce swelling and improve recovery after surgery, so you’re back to full strength and full mobility faster and with less pain and swelling. We recommend 3 sessions prior to surgery and several sessions after surgery, based on the client’s needs, however we see results in as few as one session, so no matter how close you are to your surgery, we’re happy to discuss your needs and help set you up for a great surgery and recovery.

What areas do you serve?

We serve clients in Mechanicsville, Richmond, and surrounding Virginia communities, however we have members who drive in from Fredericksburg, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and NOVA. Our clients trust us and know we get results, so we see everyone from locals to day trippers!

How long are the massage sessions?

Sessions typically range from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the treatment plan and condition being addressed, however existing clients can schedule a 30min session if their therapist approves a shorter time, and some of our therapists will do 120 minute sessions for clients who want more time on the massage table.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is required. However, many clients are referred by chiropractors, physicians, or physical therapists for specialized treatment and we love working on clients addressing pain conditions who are working toward mobility and strength goals. Our therapists are uniquely trained to address these types of conditions.

What conditions can clinical massage help with?

Clinical massage can help relieve chronic pain, muscle tension, sports injuries, nerve issues, post-surgical swelling, and limited mobility. Treatments are tailored to each client’s condition and recovery goals.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

We’re always amazed at how many conditions benefit from Manual Lymphatic Drainage! While it is most commonly used for inflammation, it benefits nerve conditions, post-concussion, neurological disorders, sleep problems, allergies, migraines, and vertigo, among so many other conditions. Your therapist will use light pressure techniques to move lymph fluid through your body and boost immune function. Lymph fluid tends to get trapped and pool in certain areas, especially when we work at a desk, stand all day, or tend toward poor posture, so your MLD therapist will encourage lymph flow and teach you how to keep your results working long after you get off the massage table.

Can I get relaxation massage from PCB?

Absolutely! While our therapists are specialty trained in advanced skills to provide effective pain management and clinical massage, they love to help you relax! And that’s why we offer our Maintenance Massages: to give you quality massage, whether your goal is pain relief, athletic training, or full body relaxation. Do you take insurance?

We provide detailed receipts for reimbursement, accept health savings cards, and partner with many providers, such as physical therapists and chiropractors, who accept insurance and can help you reach your goals.

How often should I come in?

Frequency depends on your goals and needs. Some clients benefit from weekly sessions, while others find monthly visits ideal for maintenance. We work with you to determine your ideal treatment plan based on your personal needs.

Will I be sore after my session?

Some clients experience mild soreness as muscles release tension, but this usually subsides within a day. Our goal is for you to feel great after your session, with no more soreness than you’d expect from a great workout. We’ll give you personalized aftercare tips to support your recovery and will adjust sessions based on your feedback and needs.

Is clinical massage safe for everyone?

Most people can benefit from clinical massage, but certain medical conditions require special consideration. We always conduct a thorough intake and, if necessary, consult with your healthcare provider. Our therapists are trained to collaborate with your wellness team to provide quality, integrated care that meets your needs.
